How to simplify your message to gain maximum results?

communicate11The message you give out is important. It is key because the quality of your message determines the quality of output you receive. Whether you are talking to your clients in your business, persuading your significant other to do something or getting your friends on board with your brilliant plan – your message is the vehicle that will allow you to get/not get your desired results.

Your message should always be SIMPLE and PRECISE. You don’t want to give too much information that is irrelevant. You don’t want to confuse them because when you confuse people you lose them almost immediately. The same is applicable if you provide less information too.

Have you ever gone to a restaurant and looked up the menu and instantly got confused because there’s just too many cuisines they specialize in. Or did you visit a website recently that instantly takes you to an overwhelm mode because there is just so many things happening on the screen. That’s right – people like you and me abhor confusion.

Below are 3 tried and tested ways to simplify your message that I use almost every time I open my mouth or pick up a pen to write something (letting you onto my little secret that works magic for me).

  1. brain-balance-06STRIKE A BALANCE

Meet people where they are to take them where they want to go. What it means is that there needs to be balance in your message. It needs to incorporate both your customers/audiences current realities and their aspirational realities. Acknowledge their current situation by meeting them half way and then help them elevate from their current realities into their aspirational realities through your offer.

It works- because you emotionally connect with them when you state their current situation because they feel you know them very well. Later when you tell them what you have to offer/say they can relate because the elementary trust was already created through previous emotional connection.

  1. SHOW THEM THE ROAD

Make it easy for people to follow you. Get rid of the extra details. Show them the exact way/system/process. Don’t go round and round. BE SUCCINT. I would actually go one step further and add that ‘personalize your pitch’. Give them exactly what they want to hear.

It works- because unconsciously your audience will make 2+2=4 and will know that you have done your homework and you care. They will understand you are a pro, not a time waste and that you mean what you say.

  1. back to basics 2webDIVERT YOUR EFFORT TO BASICS

It’s not about being clever but being clearer. Your audience is smart. If they are listening to you then I reckon they also believe you are smart too. Hence there is no point in being too clever. Let go of your insider jargon. Your message should be easy to pass on and easier to digest. The more technical you get the more they slip out of your hand. Your message should be so simple and clear that both your niece/nephew and your grandparents can understand it effortlessly. I am serious!

It works- because when you become too specific to your field the other person looses complete focus. They go into their mind talking to themselves contemplating the information they have just received. They loose their attention and drift elsewhere missing your point of communication

Hence next time you communicate strike a balance between realities and aspiration, show them the exact way and stick to basics. That’s how you simplify your message to get effective results.

Once you have your message ready don’t forget to test drive it. Share in the comments section below to let me know which step strikes a chord with you. If you have a message you want to share with your audience test drive it here in the comments section to check how good it is.

Till then enjoy life the way it is and see you again next Wednesday.
